- The Guardian reported that Peruvian authorities said more than 3,000 tarantulas were seized at an airport in Lima while on their way to Germany, where they could fetch an estimated €1.5 million.

The Guardian reported that the spiders were hidden inside dirty socks contained in three suitcases carried by two Germans and a Polish citizen. The report was credited to Agence France-Presse and cited the National Forestry and Wildlife Service, known as SERFOR.

Fox News reported that more than 3,000 tarantulas were found hidden inside pairs of socks in three suitcases at a Peru airport. Fox News said the discovery led to the detention of two German citizens and one Polish citizen.

The accounts differ in several respects. Fox News referred only to a Peru airport, while The Guardian named Lima as the location. Fox News described the socks as pairs of socks, while The Guardian described them as dirty socks.

Both reports describe a seizure involving three suitcases and the same mix of nationalities, two German and one Polish. Fox News reported the detentions, but the excerpt of The Guardian's report available for this story does not address whether the three travelers were detained.

Neither Fox News nor The Guardian, in the excerpts reviewed for this report, described any charges against the travelers or stated where the tarantulas were ultimately taken.
