A driver who ploughed into a headteacher cycling home from school and dragged him for more than a mile under his car has been jailed for life for murder, The Guardian reported. The driver, Simon Richardson, was told he must serve a minimum of 25 years.

According to The Guardian, Richardson drove a Volvo XC90 and ignored give-way signs at a junction before the collision with Michael Mullins. The paper reported that Mullins was trapped under the vehicle and dragged for more than a mile, and that Richardson then ran him over.

Separately, BBC News reported that Richardson was jailed for life for the murder of Michael Mullins and must serve at least 25 years. Its headline describes Mullins as a head teacher who was dragged to his death, although the BBC summary does not describe the collision itself.

The two reports agree on the sentence and the murder conviction but differ in emphasis. The Guardian's account, written by North of England correspondent Mark Brown, focuses on the collision and the driver's conduct at the junction, while the BBC summary focuses on the sentence. The BBC item lists no author.

Neither summary, as provided, states the court in which the sentence was passed, the date of the collision, or the place where it happened. The Guardian's summary also ends mid-report, so the full articles may contain additional detail not reflected here.
