Grammy-winning singer Chris Brown has been given a suspended prison sentence over an attack at a London nightclub, according to Variety and The Guardian. Variety reported that Brown was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, a term that avoids jail time, for what the outlet described as a "vicious and unprovoked" attack in 2023.
Variety also reported that before sentencing, Judge Tony Baumgartner warned Brown, saying he took account of Brown's employment and long-established career.
The Guardian, citing the Press Association, reported that Brown, 37, admitted affray earlier this year after striking a former friend twice in the head with a "heavy" tequila bottle on the dancefloor of a central London club. The Guardian placed the incident in Mayfair in 2023.
A separate report from ABC News said Brown was to be sentenced Monday over brawling at a London nightclub in 2003. That year differs from the 2023 date given by Variety and The Guardian, and the summaries available do not explain the discrepancy. The ABC summary also describes the incident as a brawl and does not mention a sentence having been imposed, while the other two reports describe a sentence already handed down.
